متن کاملFractal free energy landscapes in structural glasses.
Glasses are amorphous solids whose constituent particles are caged by their neighbours and thus cannot flow. This sluggishness is often ascribed to the free energy landscape containing multiple minima (basins) separated by high barriers. Here we show, using theory and numerical simulation, that the landscape is much rougher than is classically assumed. Deep in the glass, it undergoes a 'roughne...
متن کاملGlass Transition Temperature and Fractal Dimension of Protein Free Energy Landscapes
The free-energy landscape of two peptides is evaluated at various temperatures and an estimate for its fractal dimension at these temperatures calculated. We show that monitoring this quantity as a function of temperature allows to determine the glass transition temperature.
متن کاملProtein folding on rugged energy landscapes: conformational diffusion on fractal networks.
We perform simulations of model proteins to study folding on rugged energy landscapes. We construct "first-passage" networks as the system transitions from unfolded to native states. The nodes and bonds in these networks correspond to basins and transitions between them in the energy landscape. We find power-law relations between the folding time and the number of nodes and bonds. We show that ...
متن کاملAnnealing Networks and Fractal Landscapes
The conventional explanation for the poor scaling of Hopfield and Tank networks is that they have di culty in balancing the trade-o between the path length and the legality components of the energy function. We first describe an experiment which suggests that the conventional explanation is either wrong, or at best incomplete. We propose an alternative explanation: these networks might scale be...
